Sexualized content (thirst traps)
Exposed skin is the strongest visual stimulus evolution ever built. Creators know it, the algorithm measures it — and so the body became a currency that buys reach.
How it hooks you
Your brain prioritizes sexual stimuli automatically, before you consciously decide whether the content interests you.
- The study “More Skin, More Likes” (arXiv, 2024) measured a direct correlation: more exposed skin = more likes and followers. The algorithm learns from these signals and spreads the content further.
- Pause your thumb for even 2 seconds and the platform logs it as interest (dwell time) — even without a like. Your feed adapts without ever asking you.
- Meta officially limits “sexually suggestive” content in recommendations, but investigations (Quartz, Fox Business) showed Reels and Explore distribute it massively anyway — including to minors.
Who profits from you
Behind most thirst traps is not a spontaneous selfie but a professionally managed sales funnel.
- Instagram drives ~60% of new OnlyFans subscribers — IG teaser → automated DM → link → subscription.
- The subscription is just the “lead magnet” — the real money flows from pay-per-view messages and custom paid content in DM sequences.
- Around creators stands an industry of management agencies running the funnel like an e-shop: acquisition costs, subscriber lifetime value, and optimized “chatting” (often written by paid staff, not the creator).
- Beyond OnlyFans: reach mined with the body is sold to advertisers via brand deals — attention is attention.
The industry doesn't hide it
OnlyFans management agency MAHO states in its own materials that ~60% of its clients' new subscribers come from Instagram at a cadence of 2–3 posts per day — and describes a five-stage funnel from IG teaser to retention campaigns. An analysis by the Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation documents how engagement monetization systematically drives this self-commodification.
How to clean it from your feed
- 1Don't scroll slowly “just out of curiosity” — even a pause without a like is a signal. Scroll past immediately.
- 2Mark “Not interested” on Reels of this type — it's the fastest teaching signal.
- 3For recurring accounts choose “Don't suggest posts from this account”.
- 4If your feed is flooded, use Reset suggested content and start clean.
You'll find the universal routine (including the algorithm reset) in the feed cultivation guide →
This content feeds on the desire for attractiveness, relationships and comparison. That need is legitimate — it just deserves real fulfillment.
- →If you enjoy fitness content, stop watching it and start living it: join a local run club or parkrun — most are free and weekly.
- →Reach out to a climbing or bouldering gym and join their beginners' WhatsApp or Discord group — a real community gives you what the feed only promises: people, progress and confidence built on performance.
- →Book a fixed gym slot with a friend. One real workout a week changes more than a thousand fitness reels.
